The thyroid gland is the organ that produces the hormone called T4 (Thyroxine). It plays an important role in the endocrine or hormonal system. It regulates metabolism as well as various body functions. When the T4 hormone is secreted less than the required level, metabolism slows down and this condition is called hypothyroidism. When the T4 hormone is secreted more than it should be, this is called hyperthyroidism and speeds up metabolism. Hypothyroidism is more common in canines, while hyperthyroidism is more common in felines. If left untreated, serious consequences can occur.
