VNN Detection in Fish: Essential Support for Aquaculture Research

Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN), also known as Viral Encephalopathy and Retinopathy (VER), is one of the important viral diseases affecting fish health in aquaculture. Because the disease may lead to neurological signs, abnormal swimming behavior and increased mortality, especially in young and susceptible fish populations, reliable detection is an important part of fish health monitoring and research-based disease control.

What is VNN?

VNN is caused by viruses belonging to the genus Betanodavirus within the family Nodaviridae. The disease mainly affects the central nervous system and retina of fish. Clinical signs may include loss of balance, spiral or erratic swimming, reduced feeding activity, darkening of the body and mortality, particularly in larval and juvenile stages.

The disease has been reported in a wide range of marine and freshwater fish species. For this reason, VNN remains an important subject for aquaculture facilities, veterinary research laboratories, fish health professionals and academic institutions working on aquatic animal diseases.
